CHAPTER 8
The King Restores the Shunamite’s Land
- Elisha to the woman whose son he has raised back to life:
- Go, stay wherever you can, for the Lord is brining a 7-year famine
- She moved to
- At end of 7 years she came back
- Someone had claimed her property
- Elisha sends Gehazi to king to restore her property
- King does.
Ben Hadad, King of Syria
- Ben Hadad gets sick, sends Hazael to Elisha to get prognostication
- Elisha says he will recover…but then will die.
- Elisha then sits in stunned silence as Lord reveals that Hazael will
o Do evil to the Children of Israel
o Set on fire their strongholds
o Kill young men with the sword
o Dash children
o Rip open pregnant women
o That Hazael will become king over
- Hazael reported to king what Elisha said…but only the part where he wold recover…not the part where he would die.
- Next day, king did recover…but then Hazael took a wet cloth and placed it over his face and smothered him to death…and then reigned as king in his place.
Jehoram Reigns in Judah
- Son of Jehoshaphat (
- 32 years old
- Became king in 5th year of Joram, son of Ahab
- Wife was daughter of Ahab
- Reigned 8 years
- Did evil just like Ahab
- Yet God did not destroy
- Events:
- Libnah revolted against
Ahaziah Reigns in Judah
- Son of Jehoram (Judah)
- 22 years old
- Became king
- 12th year of Joram (son of Ahab)
- Reigned 1 year
- Mother was Athaliah
- Grand-daughter of Omri (
- She was evil
- Did evil like Ahab
- He was the son-in-law of the house of Ahab
- .Jehoahaz, Jehu’s son, became king after Jehu
CHAPTER 9
Jehu Anointed King of Israel
· Jehu = son of Jehoshaphat
· Elisha sends one of the prophets to Jehu in Ramoth Gilead
· Prophet anoints Jehu king and flees immediately
· Tells Jehu to:
o Strike down house of Ahab
o Avenge the blood of the prophets and servants of the Lord at hand of Jezebel
Joram (Israel
· Jehoram is injured after he returns from battle against Hazael of Syria
· Jehu rides to meet him.
· Watchmen say of Jehu:
o “The driving is like the driving of Jehu the son of Nimishi, for he drives furiously!”
o Joram (
· When they meet, Jehu says:
o “What peace (is there) as long as the harlotries of your mother Jezreel and her witchcraft are so many?”
· Joram thinks Ahaziah has now conspired against him, and flees
· Meanwhile, Jehu takes his bow and shoots Jehoram right through his heart.
· Jehoram dies
· Jehu had Bidkar his captain pick Jehoram up and “throw” him in the field of Naboth.
· This fulfilled the word of the Lord namely:
o 2 Kings 9:26 (NASB) 26‘Surely I have seen yesterday the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons,’ says the LORD, ‘and I will repay you in this £property,’ says the LORD. Now then, take and cast him into the property, according to the word of the LORD.”
Ahaziah of Judah
· Seeing this, Ahaziah (Judah) flees
· Jehu pursues him and kills him
· Ahaziah had become king
o 11th year of Joram (son of Ahab)
Jezebel Dies Violently
· When Jezebel hears of Jehu coming
· She paints her eyes, fixes her hair and stands by a windo
· Jehu asks who is on his side?
· Then has those (a couple of eunuchs) throw Jezebel down
· Some of her blood spatters on wall, some on horses.
· Jehu tramples her under foot
· Jehu then goes in town and has a feast
· When they come back to bury her, all they find is a skull, feet, and hands
· Fulfilled the prophecy of the Lord concerning her:
o 2 Kings 9:36 - 37 (NASB) 36Therefore they returned and told him. And he said, “This is the word of the LORD, which He spoke by His servant Elijah the Tishbite, saying, ‘In the property of Jezreel the dogs shall eat the flesh of Jezebel; 37and the corpse of Jezebel will be as dung on the face of the field in the property of Jezreel, so they cannot say, “This is Jezebel.”’”
· … which is exactly what Elijah had predicted earlier:
o 1 Kings 21:23 - 25 (NASB) 23“Of Jezebel also has the LORD spoken, saying, ‘The dogs will eat Jezebel in the district of Jezreel.’ 24“The one belonging to Ahab, who dies in the city, the dogs will eat, and the one who dies in the field the birds of heaven will eat.” 25Surely there was no one like Ahab who sold himself to do evil in the sight of the LORD, because Jezebel his wife incited him.
CHAPTER 10
Ahab’s 70 Sons Killed
· Jehu then headed to
· The leaders were afraid of him.
· Jehu asks them to take the heads of all Ahab’s sons
· They are afraid of him and did it, bringing their 70 heads to him in baskets
· He put them in two piles at the entrance gate until the next morning.
· Jehu then went after all the rest of Ahab’s family
· Jehu then killed all that remained of Ahab’s family in Jezreel.
o 2 Kings 10:10 - 11 (NASB) 10“Know then that there shall fall to the earth nothing of the word of the LORD, which the LORD spoke concerning the house of Ahab, for the LORD has done what He spoke through His servant Elijah.” 11So Jehu killed all who remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, and all his great men and his acquaintances and his priests, until he left him without a survivor.

o 1 Kings 21:17 - 24 (NASB) 17Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 18“Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who is in Samaria; behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth where he has gone down to take possession of it. 19“You shall speak to him, saying, ‘Thus says the LORD, “Have you murdered and also taken possession?”’ And you shall speak to him, saying, ‘Thus says the LORD, “In the place where the dogs licked up the blood of Naboth the dogs will lick up your blood, even yours.”’” 20Ahab said to Elijah, “Have you found me, O my enemy?” And he answered, “I have found you, because you have sold yourself to do evil in the sight of the LORD. 21“Behold, I will bring evil upon you, and will utterly sweep you away, and will cut off from Ahab every male, both bond and free in Israel; 22and I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, because of the provocation with which you have provoked Me to anger, and because you have made Israel sin. 23“Of Jezebel also has the LORD spoken, saying, ‘The dogs will eat Jezebel in the district of Jezreel.’ 24“The one belonging to Ahab, who dies in the city, the dogs will eat, and the one who dies in the field the birds of heaven will eat."
o 1 Kings 21:29 (NASB) 29“Do you see how Ahab has humbled himself before Me? Because he has humbled himself before Me, I will not bring the evil in his days, but I will bring the evil upon his house in his son’s days.”
Ahaziah’s 42 Brothers Killed
· Jehu then headed to
· On the way he met the brothers of Ahaziah (Judah)
o J: Who are you?
o Bros: We are brothers (but more likely cousins, or relatives) of Ahaziah; we’ve come to greet the king and sons of the queen mother.
o J: “Take them alive, and kill them.” Which Jehu’s soldiers did.
Rest of Ahab’s Family Killed
· On the way to
· Jehu: Is your heart with me?
· Jon: Yes
· Jehu: then come up in chariot and watch my zeal for the Lord.
· When they came to
· … According to the word of the Lord which He spoke through Elijah.
Worshipers of Baal Killed
· Jehu then forms a deceptive plot to separate the Baal worshipers from true believers.
· He proclaims:
o Ahab served Baal a little, I will serve him a lot.
o Call all the prophets of Baal … let no one be missing
o Prepare a great sacrifice for Baal…whoever is not there shall not live.
o Jehu sent through all
o He asked Jonadab to make sure there were not worshipers of the Lord in the temple.
o He stationed 80 warriors outside to make sure no one escaped
o He then started the feast.
o At the end, he called his captain to go in and kill all. They did.
o He then burned the temple and all the sacred relics to Baal.
o Thus Jehu destroyed Baal from
· BUT, Jehu did not turn from the sins of Jeroboam…and the golden calves.
· God:
o 2 Kings 10:30 - 31 (NASB) 30The LORD said to Jehu, “Because you have done well in executing what is right in My eyes, and have done to the house of Ahab according to all that was in My heart, your sons of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel.” 31But Jehu was not careful to walk in the law of the LORD, the God of
Death of Jehu

Jehoahaz Reigns in Israel
· Jehoahaz, Jehu’s son, became king after Jehu
CHAPTER 11
Athaliah Reigns in Judah
· Athaliah = Ahaziah’s mother
· She began to reign over
· When she saw her son (Ahaziah) was dead, she destroyed all the royal heirs
· Jehosheba = daughter of king Joram & sister of Ahaziah
· BUT Jehosheba hid Joash (the son of Ahaziah) and his nurse from Athaliah
· She hid him in the house of the Lord for 6 years
· NOTE: Athaliah was not a KING, but usurped that position and authority and was evil
· NOTE: This was a warning sign to Judah…even though God’s patience with them was longer than with Israel, He was “sending warning shots over Judah’s bow” by letting this queen usurp the throne for a time.
Joash Crowned King of Judah
· Jehoida = High Priest
o 2 Chronicles 22:8 - 12 (NASB) 8It came about when Jehu was executing judgment on the house of Ahab, he found the princes of Judah and the sons of Ahaziah’s brothers ministering to Ahaziah, and slew them. 9He also sought Ahaziah, and they caught him while he was hiding in
· Jehoida (High Priest) got Captains of body guards and escorts.
o Made a covenant with them
o Took and oath from them
o Showed them the king’s son (Joash)
o Set up a plan
1/3 come on duty on Sabbath
1/3 go to gate of Sur
1/3 go to gate behind escorts
Watch over the house so no one tears it down.
Then the 2/3 not on duty shall surround the king on all sides with your weapons and whoever comes in range shall be put to death.
o He then
Brought out the kings son
Put crown on him
Gave him the Testimony
Made him king
Anointed him
Clapped their hands
Shouted “Long live the king!”
Athaliah Dies
· She sees this, cries out “Treason, treason!”
· Jehoiada told guards take her outside and kill all who follow her.
· As soon as she was clear away from the temple they killed her as well.
Jehoiada Makes Covenant with People and God
· Covenant between people and king
o They should be the Lord’s people
· They then
o tore down
o Broke the altars and images
o Killed Mattan the priest of Baal
· All the people
o Rejoiced
o City was quiet
o For they had slain Athaliah with the sword
· Joash was 7 years old
CHAPTER 12
Johoash Repairs the Temple
· Johoash becomes king in
o In 7th year of Jehu
o Reigned 40 years
o Mother = Zibiah of
o He did what was right in sight of Lord
o BUT high places (of worship) were not taken away
· He set up a program for all to bring $$ into priest voluntarily and money was to be used to make repairs on temple.
· In 23rd year…the temple was still not being repaired so he called the priests together and told them stop collecting money until you start doing the repairs.
· Once they started gathering the skilled workers, they “did not require an accounting of them because they dealt faithfully.”
o Lord: help me to do my work so that my supervisors don’t need an accounting because they know I deal faithfully with what they have entrusted me.
Hazael Threatens Jerusalem
· Hazael took
· Then he headed for
· Then Jehoash (king of
· Then Jehoash left
Joash Dies
· His servants formed a conspiracy and killed Joash
· Amaziah his son reigned in his place.
