CHAPTER 6

Solomon’s Speech after Completing the Temple Work

2 Chronicles 6:6 - 11 (NASB) ⁶but I have chosen Jerusalem that My name might be there, and I have chosen David to be over My people Israel.’ ⁷“Now it was in the heart of my father David to build a house for the name of the LORD, the God of Israel. ⁸“But the LORD said to my father David, ‘Because it was in your heart to build a house for My name, you did well that it was in your heart. ⁹‘Nevertheless you shall not build the house, but your son who will be born to you, he shall build the house for My name.’ ¹⁰“Now the LORD has fulfilled His word which He spoke; for I have risen in the place of my father David and sit on the throne of Israel, as the LORD promised, and have built the house for the name of the LORD, the God of Israel. ¹¹“There I have set the ark in which is the covenant of the LORD, which He made with the sons of Israel.”

Solomon’s Prayer of Dedication

2 Chronicles 6:14 - 15 (NASB) ¹⁴He said, “O LORD, the God of Israel, there is no god like You in heaven or on earth, keeping covenant and showing lovingkindness to Your servants who walk before You with all their heart; ¹⁵who has kept with Your servant David, my father, that which You have promised him; indeed You have spoken with Your mouth and have fulfilled it with Your hand, as it is this day.

2 Chronicles 6:20 - 21 (NASB) ²⁰that Your eye may be open toward this house day and night, toward the place of which You have said that You would put Your name there, to listen to the prayer which Your servant shall pray toward this place. ²¹“Listen to the supplications of Your servant and of Your people Israel when they pray toward this place; hear from Your dwelling place, from heaven; hear and forgive.

2 Chronicles 6:22 (NASB) ²²“If a man sins against his neighbor and is made to take an oath, and he comes and takes an oath before Your altar in this house,

2 Chronicles 6:24 (NASB) ²⁴“If Your people Israel are defeated before an enemy because they have sinned against You, and they return to You and confess Your name, and pray and make supplication before You in this house,

2 Chronicles 6:26 (NASB) ²⁶“When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain because they have sinned against You, and they pray toward this place and confess Your name, and turn from their sin when You afflict them;

2 Chronicles 6:28 (NASB) ²⁸“If there is famine in the land, if there is pestilence, if there is blight or mildew, if there is locust or grasshopper, if their enemies besiege them in the land of their cities, whatever plague or whatever sickness there is,

2 Chronicles 6:34 (NASB) ³⁴“When Your people go out to battle against their enemies, by whatever way You shall send them, and they pray to You toward this city which You have chosen and the house which I have built for Your name,

2 Chronicles 6:36 (NASB) ³⁶“When they sin against You (for there is no man who does not sin) and You are angry with them and deliver them to an enemy, so that they take them away captive to a land far off or near,

2 Chronicles 6:40 - 42 (NASB) ⁴⁰“Now, O my God, I pray, let Your eyes be open and Your ears attentive to the prayer offered in this place. ⁴¹“Now therefore arise, O LORD God, to Your resting place, You and the ark of Your might; let Your priests, O LORD God, be clothed with salvation and let Your godly ones rejoice in what is good. ⁴²“O LORD God, do not turn away the face of Your anointed; remember Your lovingkindness to Your servant David.”

CHAPTER 7

The Shekinah Glory

2 Chronicles 7:1 - 3 (NASB) ¹Now when Solomon had finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the LORD filled the house. ²The priests could not enter into the house of the LORD because the glory of the LORD filled the LORD’S house. ³All the sons of Israel, seeing the fire come down and the glory of the LORD upon the house, bowed down on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave praise to the LORD, saying, “Truly He is good, truly His lovingkindness is everlasting.”

Solomon Dedicates the Temple

2 Chronicles 7:10 (NASB) ¹⁰Then on the twenty-third day of the seventh month he sent the people to their tents, rejoicing and happy of heart because of the goodness that the LORD had shown to David and to Solomon and to His people Israel.

God’s Second Appearance to Solomon

2 Chronicles 7:12 - 22 (NASB) ¹²Then the LORD appeared to Solomon at night and said to him, “I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for Myself as a house of sacrifice. ¹³“If I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among My people, ¹⁴and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land. ¹⁵“Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to the prayer offered in this place. ¹⁶“For now I have chosen and consecrated this house that My name may be there forever, and My eyes and My heart will be there perpetually. ¹⁷“As for you,

if you walk before Me as your father David walked, even to do according to all that I have commanded you, and will keep My statutes and My ordinances,

¹⁸then I will establish your royal throne as I covenanted with your father David, saying, ‘You shall not lack a man to be ruler in Israel.’

¹⁹“But if you turn away and forsake My statutes and My commandments which I have set before you, and go and serve other gods and worship them,

²⁰then I will uproot you from My land which I have given you, and this house which I have consecrated for My name I will cast out of My sight and I will make it a proverb and a byword among all peoples. ²¹“As for this house, which was exalted, everyone who passes by it will be astonished and say, ‘Why has the LORD done thus to this land and to this house?’ ²²“And they will say, ‘Because they forsook the LORD, the God of their fathers who brought them from the land of Egypt, and they adopted other gods and worshiped them and served them; therefore He has brought all this adversity on them.’”

CHAPTER 9

Queen of Sheba Visits

Solomon’s Wealth and Power

· 666 talents of gold

· This is equal to 126,207 pounds of gold.

· At today’s price of ~$800/ounce, and 16 ounces per pound, this would yield MORE THAN $1.6 BILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF GOLD!!!!!

A talent of silver (2 Kings 5:22) contained 3,000 shekels (Ex. 38:25,26), and was equal to 94-3/7 lbs. avoirdupois.

The Greek talent, however, as in the Septuagint, was only 82 1/4 lbs. It was in the form of a circular mass, as the Hebrew name kikkar denotes.

A talent of gold (Ex. 25:39) was double the weight of a talent of silver (2 Sam. 12:30).

2 Chronicles 9:25 - 28 (NASB) ²⁵Now Solomon had 4,000 stalls for horses and chariots and 12,000 horsemen, and he stationed them in the chariot cities and with the king in Jerusalem. ²⁶He was the ruler over all the kings from the Euphrates River even to the land of the Philistines, and as far as the border of Egypt. ²⁷The king made silver as common as stones in Jerusalem, and he made cedars as plentiful as sycamore trees that are in the lowland. ²⁸And they were bringing horses for Solomon from Egypt and from all countries.

· THIS WAS ALL PROHIBITED BY GOD!!!

Solomon Dies

· 40 years

· Rehoboam reigned in his place.

CHAPTER 10

Revolt Against Rehoboam

· Jeroboam came back from hiding in Egypt

· He comes to Rehoboam and says:

o 2 Chronicles 10:4 (NASB) ⁴“Your father made our yoke hard; now therefore lighten the hard service of your father and his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you.”

· Rehoboam said come back in 3 days.

· Meanwhile he consulted with the Old Wise Men and the Younger Men.

o Old men gave him wise counsel…listen to them and they’ll follow you

o Young men said the opposite

o He took the advice of the young menàBAD

o 2 Chronicles 10:13 - 15 (NASB) ¹³The king answered them harshly, and King Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the elders. ¹⁴He spoke to them according to the advice of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.” ¹⁵So the king did not listen to the people, for it was a turn of events from God that the LORD might establish His word, which He spoke through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

2 Chronicles 10:19 (NASB) ¹⁹So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.
