Adonijah, David's son by Haggith, exhalted himself trying to become king.
Note: His father David had not rebuked him at any time saying, "Why have you done so?"
The Bathsheba w/ Nathan the prophet went to David and reminded him of his oath to place Solomon as king after him.
David appoints Solomon to rule after him.
CHAPTER 2
David's charge to Solomon:
- Be strong
- Prove yourself a man
- Keep charge of the Lord your God to walk in His ways, keep His statues, His commandments, His judgments, His testimonies
- That you may prosper in all you do and where ever you turn
- executes Adonijah
- exiles Abiathar the priest because of his hand with Adonijah
- executes Joab
- executes Shimei who cursed David, but Solomon had given him a second chance to live in a city and not leave it...when he did leave it...Solomon executed him because of not keeping his own oath.
Solomon was half-hearted:
- loved the Lord, walking in all His statues EXCEPT he sacrificed and burned incense at the high places
- asks what do you want Me to give you?
- You showed mercy to my father David
- I am a child and don't know what to do
- give me an "understanding heart to judge Your people that I may discern between good and evil"
- besides wisdom and discernement (an understanding heart), also
- riches and honor above anyone among all the kings
- Also length of life, IF he would walk in the Lord's ways, keep the statues & commandments
CHAPTER 4
Solomon had peace on every side.
BUT HE MULTIPLIED HORSES in direct disobedience to what God had commanded earlier in Duet 17:16
- But he (your king) shall not multiply horses for himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt to multiply horses, for the Lord has said to you, "You shall not return that way again"
- Neither shall he multiply wives for himself, lest his heart turn away
- Nor shall he multiply silver and gold for himself.
- ...
- he shall read it (the book of this law) all the days of his life that he may learn to fear the Lord his God and be careful to observe all the words of this law and these statues, that his heart may not be lifted above his brethren that he may not turn aside from the commandment to the right hand or to the left
- MULTIPLIED horses to himself...he had 40,000 stalls of horses for his chariots and 12,000 horsement.
Solomon prepares to build the temple to the Lord.
CHAPTER 6
Solomon builds the temple to the Lord in 7 years
Built in the 480th year after Israel had come out of Egypt.
Then WORD OF LORD came to Solomon again:
- IF you walk in My statutes, execute My judgments, keep all My commandments, and walk in them,
- THEN I will perform My word with you which I spoke to your father David. And I willdwell among the children of Israel and will not forsake My people Israel.
Solomon took 13 years to build his own house.
He made a bronze bowl (sea) which was 10 cubits in diameter and 30 cubits in circumfrence...the ratio of these is PI (C = PI*D +> PI = 30/10 = 3 which is 3.14159 rounded to the nearest decimal)
CHAPTER 8
Solomon brings the Ark to his new temple
Nothing in the Ark except:
- two tablets of stone which Moses put there at Horeb
Glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord
Solomon blessed the people and reiterated how David had prepared for this under God's leading.
- God:
- I have chosen no city ... in which to build My house
- BUT I chose David OVER my people
- It was in the HEART of David to build a temple
- BUT Lord said...it was good what was in your heart, BUT you won't build it, your son will.
- Lord has fulfilled His word today!
- There is no God like You
- You keep your covenant and show mercy and promises
- THEREFORE keep what you promised to David, today
- Let all Your words come true, namely:
- My name shall be there
- When anyone sins...hear...and act...and judge...
- When your people are defeated bcs of sin and
- turn back
- confess Your name
- pray
- make suplication to You
- THEN
- hear
- forgive
- bring them back to the land which You gave to their forefathers
- WHEN:
- heavens are shut up
- no rain because of sin
- they pray
- confess Your name
- turn from their sin
- THEN
- hear
- forgive
- teach them the food way in which they should walk
- send rain
- WHEN
- there is famine, pestilence, blight or mildew, locusts etc.
- and prayer or supplication is made BY ANYONE OR BY ALL YOUR PEOPLE
- each one knows the plagues of his own heart
- THEN
- hear
- forgive
- act
- give to everyone according to his ways
- WHEN
- Your people go out to battle
- they pray to the Lord
- THEN
- hear
- maintain their cause
- WHEN
- the sin against You
- You become angry and deliver them to enemy and they take them captive to the land of the enemy far or near (came true in Assyrian and Babylonian captivities)
- they come to their senses in their captivity saying
- We have sinned
- Done wrong
- Committed wickedness
- return to You with all their heart and with all their soul
- Pray towards You
- THEN
- hear
- maintain their cause
- forgive
- grant compassion
- WHY?
- YOU SEPARATED THEM FROM AMONG ALL THE PEOPLES OF THE EARTH TO BE YOUR INHERITANCE
CAL: "There has not failed one word of all His good promise, which He promised through His servant Moses"
CAL:"He may incline our hearts to Himself"
WHY? "that ll the peoples of the earth may know that the Lord is God; there is no other"
RESULT/ACTION? "Let your heart therefore be LOYAL to the Lord our God to WALK in His statu\utes and KEEP His commandments as at this day"
CHAPTER 9
God appears to Solomon the 2nd time:
- I have heard your prayer
- I have consecrated this house
- My eyes and heart will be there perpetually
- NOW IF
- you walk
- in integrity of heart
- and uprightness
- you keep
- My statutes
- My judgements
- THEN
- I will establish the throne of your kingdom over Israel forever
- You shall not fail to have a man on the throne of Israel
- BUT IF
- you or your sons
- turn from me
- do not keep my commandments & statutes
- go and serve other gods
- worship them
- THEN
- I will
- Cut off Israel for mland
- cast out of My sight
- Israel will be
- A proverb
- and byword among all the peoples
- This house (temple) will be:
- astonished by all who pass by
- hissed at
- people will say,
- "Why has the Lord done thus to this land and to this house?
- people will answer:
- Because they FORSOOK THE LORD THEIR GOD, who brought them out of Egypt, and
- EMBRACED OTHER GODS and
- WORSHIPED THEM
- SERVED THEM
- Therefore the Lord has brought all the calamity on them!
- Hiram king of Tyre supplied Solomon with ... gold as much as he desired
- Hiram sent Solomon 120 talents of gold
- Note: a "talent" was variously a unit of mass equal to the mass of 1 cubic foot of water (an amphora), or when it referred to a "talent of silver or gold" was the measure of money equal roughly to the weight of gold equal to the weight of a person.
- This would equal gold weighing roughly the weight of 120 men.
- At 16 oz / pound, a 150 pound man would weigh 2,400 ounces. At $1000 per ounce of gold (at 2008 valuations), this would amount to $2.4 million dollars worth of gold!!
Note: "ruled over the people who did the work" ... "ruling" is assumed to be or associated with "over" not "under" (9:23)
CHAPTER 10
Queen of Sheba visits Solomon
He answers all her questions
Her response:
- Blessed be the Lord your God who delighted in you setting you on the throne of Israel
- 666 talents of gold yearly
- from above that would equal nearly $1.6 million dollars (in 2008 value) every year!!!
- Made 200 large shields containing 600 shekels of gold each
- Made 300 shields of hammered gold containing 3 minas of gold each.
- All drinking vessels were gold
- Silver was considered worthless
BEGINNING OF SOLOMONS DOWNFALL
- all the earth brought ships of gold (with silver, ivory, apes, monkeys??) every three years.
- each man brought presents of gold (with garments, armor, spices, HORSES, and mules at a set rate each year
- Solomon gathered (this was the beginning crack in his heart)
- Chariots (1,400)
- Horsemen (12,000)
- ... made
- Silver as common in Jerusalem and stones
- NOTE: THIS WAS FORBIDDEN BY GOD IN DUET 17:16
- cedar trees as abundant as sycamores
- ... had
- HORSES IMPORTED FROM EGYPT (valued at 150 shekels of silver)
- NOTE: THIS WAS FORBIDDEN BY GOD IN DUET 17:16
- brought in chariots from Egypt valued at 600 shekels of silver
- NOTE: God had also forbidden him to send
