Ps 6-10

CHAPTER 6

Prayer for Mercy in Time of Trouble.

  1. Lord
    1. Do not rebuke my in Your anger
    2. Don’t chasten me in Your wrath
    3. Be gracious to me…for I am pining away
    4. Heal me…my bones are dismayed/my soul is dismayed
  2. Question:
    1. But Lord, how long?
  3. Lord:
    1. Rescue my soul
    2. Save me because of Your loving-kindness (there is no mention of You in death…and who is going to give You thanks in Sheol?)
    3. I am weary with sighing—every night I make my bed swim (with tears)
    4. My eye wastes away with grief
  4. So you who do iniquity
    1. Depart from me
  5. Why?
    1. The Lord has heard my weeping voice
    2. The Lord has heard my supplication
    3. The Lord receives my prayer
  6. Therefore:
    1. All my enemies will be ashamed and greatly dismayed
    2. They shall turn back
    3. They shall suddenly be ashamed.

CHAPTER 7

The Lord Implored to Defend the Psalmist against the Wicked

  1. Lord
    1. I have taken refuge in You
    2. Save me from those pursuing me
    3. Deliver me (before they tear my soul like a lion)
  2. IF
    1. I have done this
    2. There is injustice in my hands
    3. I have rewarded evil to my friend
    4. I have plundered him who was my adversary without cause
  3. THEN
    1. Let the enemy pursue my soul and overtake it
    2. Let him trample my life down to the ground
  4. Lord:
    1. Arise in Your anger
    2. Lift up Yourself against the rage of my adversaries
    3. Arouse Yourself for me
    4. Let the assembly of the peoples encompass You
    5. Return on high over them
    6. Vindicate me..according to my righteousness
    7. Let the evil of the wicked come to an end
  5. IF
    1. A man does not repent
  6. THEN
    1. He will sharpen His sword
  7. He
    1. Has bent His bow and made it ready
    2. Prepared for Himself deadly weapons
    3. Makes His arrows fiery shafts
    4. Travails with wickedness
    5. Conceives mischief and brings forth falsehood
    6. Has dug a pit and hollowed it out
    7. Fallend into the hole which he made
    8. His violence will descend upon his own pate
  8. I
    1. Give thanks to the Lord according to His righteousness
    2. Will sing praise to the name of the Lord most high.

CHAPTER 8

The Lord’s Glory and Man’s Dignity

  1. Lord
    1. Your name is majestic in all the earth
    2. You have displayed Your splendor above the heavens
    3. You have established strength from the mouth of infants and nursing babies
  2. When I consider
    1. Your heavens,
    2. The work of Your fingers
    3. The moon, stars, which you have ordained
  3. I have to ask…
    1. Q. What is man that You take thought of him?
    2. Q. What is the son of man that You care for him?
  4. You have
    1. Made man a little lower than God
    2. Crowned him with glory and majesty
    3. To rule over the works of Your hands
    4. Put all things under his feet
  5. Oh Lord
    1. How majestic is Your name in all the earth

CHAPTER 9

A Psalm of Thanksgiving for God’s Justice

  1. I will
    1. Give thanks to the Lord with all my heart
    2. Tell of all Your wonders
    3. Be glad and exult in You
    4. Sing praise to Your name O most high
  2. My enemies…]
    1. When they turn back…they stumble and perish before You
  3. WHY? Because You:
    1. Maintained my just cause
    2. Sat on the throne judging righteously
    3. Rebuked the nations
    4. Have destroyed the wicked
    5. Blotted out the name of the wicked forever
  4. BUT, You…
    1. Abide forever
    2. Established Your throne for judgment
    3. Will judge the world in righteousness
    4. Will execute judgment for the peoples with equity
  5. The LORD
    1. Will be a stronghold for oppressed
    2. Will be a stronghold in times of trouble
  6. Those who know Your name
    1. Will put their trust in You
  7. Why?
    1. For You O Lord have not forsaken those who seek You.
  8. THEREFORE::
    1. Sing praise to the Lord who dwells in Zion
    2. Declare His deeds among the peoples
  9. WHY?
    1. For He who requires blood remembers them
    2. He does not forget the cry of the afflicted
  10. THEREFORE:
    1. Be gracious to me, O Lord
    2. See my affliction from those who hate me
    3. Lift me up from the gates of death (Why? So that I may praise You)
  11. The Nations:
    1. Have sunk down in the pit which they have made.
    2. Have sunk down in the net which they hid because their own foot got caught in it.
  12. The Lord
    1. Has made Himself known
    2. Has executed judgment
    3. Snares the wicked in the work of His hands
  13. The wicked
    1. Return to Sheol
    2. Same with the nations who forget God
  14. Why?
    1. The needy will not always be forgotten
    2. Hope of the afflicted will not perish forever
  15. So, Lord
    1. Arise, do not let man prevail
    2. Let the nations be judged before You
    3. Put them in fear, O Lord
    4. Let the nations know that they are but men.

CHAPTER 10

A Prayer for the Overthrow of the Wicked

  1. Question: WHY?
    1. Do You stand far off, O Lord?
    2. Do You hide Yourself in times of trouble?
  2. The wicked
    1. Pursue the afflicted hotly (let them be caught in their own plots)
    2. Boasts of his heart’s desire
    3. (Greedy) curses and spurns the Lord
    4. Do not seek Him, in their haughtiness
    5. Thoughts are, “There is no God”
    6. His ways prosper
  3. But…
    1. Your judgments are on high, out of his sight…
    2. He snorts at His adversaries
    3. He says to himself…”I will not be moved”
    4. He says, I will not be in adversity…throughout all generations
    5. His mouth is full of curses and deceit and oppression
    6. Under his tongue is mischief and wickedness
    7. He sites in the lurking places of the villages
    8. He kills the innocent in the hiding places
    9. His eyes stealthily watch for the unfortunate
    10. He lurks in a hiding place as a lion in his lair
    11. He lurks to catch the afflicted
    12. He catches the afflicted when he draws him into his net
    13. He crouches
    14. He bows down
    15. The unfortunate fall by his mighty ones
    16. He says to himself, “God has forgotten; He has hidden His face; he will never see”
  4. (Therefore)
    1. Arise Lord
    2. Lift up Your hand
    3. Do not forget the afflicted
  5. WHY?
    1. His the wicked spurned God?
  6. (Because)
    1. He has said to himself, “You will not require it”
  7. (But)
    1. You have seen it,
    2. You beheld mischief and vexation
    3. The unfortunate commits himself to You
    4. You have been the helper of the orphan
    5. You break the arm of the wicked and the evildoer
    6. You seek out his wickedness until You find none.
  8. The Lord
    1. Is king forever
  9. The Nations
    1. Have perished from His land
  10. O Lord
    1. You have heard the desire of the humble
    2. You will strengthen their heart
    3. You will incline Your ear
    4. You will vindicate the orphan and the oppressed
  11. Why?
    1. So that man who is of the earth will no longer cause terror.
