PS 1-5

PSALMS

CHAPTER 1

Wicked and Righteous Contrasted

  1. Blessed is the man who stays far from wicked by not:
    1. Walking in counsel of sinners
    2. Standing in path of sinners
    3. Siting in seat of scoffers
  2. Blessed is the righteous man whose
    1. Delight is in the law of the Lord
    2. Meditates in that law day and night
  3. Righteous man:
    1. Is like a tree firmly planted by water
    2. Tree yielding fruit in its season
    3. Tree whose leaf does not wither
    4. Who prospers in what he does
    5. Lord knows his way
  4. Wicked man:
    1. Not like a firmly planted tree
    2. Like chaff blown away by wind
    3. Will not stand in judgment
    4. Will not be in assembly of righteous
    5. His way will perish

CHAPTER 2

Reign of Lord’s Anointed

  1. Questions—WHY??
    1. Nations in uproar?
    2. Peoples devising a vain thing?
    3. Kings of the earth taking their stand?
    4. Rulers taking counsel together?
  2. …all against
    1. The Lord, and (God the Father)
    2. His Anointed (Jesus)
  3. God’s response:
    1. Laughing
    2. Scoffs at them
    3. Speak to them in His anger
    4. Terrify them in His fury
  4. Why can God say/do this?
    1. He has installed His King (Jesus) in Jerusalem
    2. He is fulfilling His decree
  5. God’s prediction?
    1. Ask Me and I will give you the nations as Your possession
    2. You will break them with a rod of iron
    3. You will shatter them like earthenware
  6. God’s counsel to nations:
    1. Show discernment
    2. Take warning
    3. Worship the Lord with reverence
    4. Rejoice with trembling
    5. Pay homage to Jesus so He doesn’t become angry
    6. Be blessed if you take refuge in Him

CHAPTER 3

A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom his son.

  1. God
    1. My adversaries have increased
    2. Many rising against me
    3. Many say there is no deliverance for me from God
  2. But You are:
    1. A shield about me
    2. My glory
    3. One who lifts my head
  3. I was

i. Crying to the Lord with my voice

    1. And He

i. Answered me from His holy mountain

  1. I
    1. Lay down
    2. Slept
    3. Awoke (for the Lord sustains me)
    4. Will not be afraid of 10,000 who have set themselves against me
  2. Lord
    1. Arise
    2. Save me
  3. Why?
    1. You have smitten all my enemies
    2. Shattered the teeth of the wicked
    3. Salvation belongs to the Lord
    4. You blessing is on Your people.

CHAPTER 4

Evening Prayer of Trust in God.

For the choir director; on stringed instruments. A Psalm of David.

  1. Answer me when I call
  2. Relieve me in distress
  3. Be gracious to me
  4. Hear my prayer
  5. Questions:
    1. How long will my honor become a reproach?
    2. How long will you love what is worthless?
    3. How long will you aim at deception?
  6. Know that…
    1. The Lord sets apart the godly man for Himself
    2. The Lord hears when I call
  7. Therefore:
    1. Tremble
    2. Don not sin
    3. Meditate in your heart on your bed
    4. Be still
    5. Offer the sacrifices of righteousness
    6. Trust the Lord
  8. Many ask…
    1. Who will show us any good?
  9. So God…
    1. Look on us Lord
    2. Put gladness in my heart
    3. Then I will lie down and sleep
  10. Why?
    1. You alone make me dwell in safety

CHAPTER 5

Prayer for Protection from the Wicked.

For the choir director; for flute accompaniment. A Psalm of David

  1. Lord
    1. Listen to me
    2. Consider my groaning
    3. Heed my cry for help

i. For to You I pray.

  1. Lord
    1. You hear my voice in the morning
    2. In the morning I will pray to you (and watch)
  2. Why?
    1. You are

i. Not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness

ii. Not filled with evil

iii. Boastful don’t stand before You

iv. Hate all who do iniquity

v. Destroy those who speak falsehood

vi. One who abhors bloodshed and deceitful man

    1. But me?

i. I will enter Your house by Your loving-kindness

ii. I will bow in reverence at Your holy temple

  1. Lord
    1. Lead me in Your righteousness because of my foes
    2. Make Your way straight before me
  2. Why?
    1. There is nothing reliable in what they say
    2. Their inward part is destruction itself
    3. Their throat is an open grave
  3. So Lord…
    1. Hold them guilty
    2. Let them fall by their own devices
    3. Thrust out those full of a multitude of transgressions—the rebels
  4. But Lord …
    1. Make those who trust in You be glad
    2. Let them sing for joy
    3. Shelter them
    4. Let those who love Your name exult in You
  5. Why?
    1. Because it is You who blesses the righteous man
    2. You surround him with favor as a shield.
